Osteoblasts build bone. They lay down the protein scaffold, then mineralise it — and they do it continuously, because bone is rebuilt throughout life.

What it is

An osteoblast is the cell responsible for making new bone. They work in sheets along the surface of existing bone rather than individually.

An osteoblast that finishes its work and becomes trapped in the bone it has just made does not die — it changes into an osteocyte, a long-lived cell that sits inside the bone and senses mechanical load.

What it does in the body

Bone is made in two stages. First the osteoblast secretes osteoid: a soft, unmineralised matrix that is mostly type I collagen. Then calcium and phosphate are deposited into that matrix as crystals, which is what makes bone hard.

Bone is not inert. It is continuously demolished and rebuilt — osteoclasts break old bone down, osteoblasts lay new bone in its place, and the balance between the two determines whether bone mass is rising or falling.

Osteocytes, the retired osteoblasts embedded in the matrix, detect the mechanical strain running through the bone and signal for more or less rebuilding accordingly. It is how bone adapts to load.
