Insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cells
Beta cells are the body’s glucose sensors. They sit in the pancreas, read the sugar level in the blood continuously, and release insulin in proportion to what they read.
What it is
Beta cells are one of several cell types packed into the islets of Langerhans — small clusters scattered through the pancreas that together make up only a couple of percent of the organ by weight.
A healthy adult pancreas holds roughly a million islets, and beta cells are the most numerous cell inside them.
What it does in the body
A beta cell does something unusual: it measures. Glucose from the bloodstream enters the cell and is metabolised, and the amount of energy that releases is, in effect, a reading of how much sugar is in the blood.
When that reading rises, a chain of events inside the cell ends with insulin-filled vesicles fusing with the cell membrane and emptying insulin into the bloodstream. When the reading falls, release slows.
Insulin then travels to muscle, liver and fat, where it instructs those tissues to take glucose up out of the blood and either use it or store it. The system is a loop: glucose up, insulin up, glucose down, insulin down — running continuously, adjusting minute by minute.
